Combatting Maternity Care Deserts in the US

This session will be focused on “maternity care deserts,” an area where there are not enough hospitals, health care providers or health care services for pregnant and postpartum women. It is estimated that about 7 million women of childbearing age live where there is no or limited access to maternity care. Yet women who live in these areas give birth to more than 500,000 babies a year. It's time for change. This session will be a conversation between Stacey D. Stewart, President and CEO of March of Dimes, and Dr. Zsakeba Henderson, Chief Medical & Health Officer, who will discuss how maternity care deserts contribute to the U.S.’s urgent maternal and infant health crisis, especially for moms and babies of color, as well as the policy solutions needed to better serve women and babies.
