Cancel the 3rd Shift: Improving Retention of Women

We’ve all heard of women’s Second Shift at home, but it turns out women also have a Third Shift at work. Women disproportionately carry the burden of “office housework” — that’s what some experts call non-promotable, less valued work — in addition to official work functions. These dynamics are even more extreme for women of color and other underrepresented groups. This not only slows women’s advancement at work; it reinforces problematic gender norms around unpaid home labor. Organizations can’t afford to accept the status quo. Women still make up just 10% of C-suite positions, and the pandemic has precipitated a regression on gender equality — all while top talent is making unprecedented demands for workplace equity.
