Venue: Austin Convention Center, Room 15 Dr. Dave Anderson, Maddie Frick, Dr. Caylin McCallick, Steve Roessner Hearing loss affects millions of American adults and isn’t just a problem for soldiers firing rockets or machinists in factories: musicians and concert-goers are at particularly high risk for hearing loss due to the loud and impulsive nature of musical sounds during performances. Earplug use is becoming more common in the music community, but most off-the-shelf earplugs completely distort musical sounds and therefore discourage repeated use. In this panel, we’ll be discussing the types of hearing loss common to musicians, the difference between musical sounds and other types of noise exposure, and what type of hearing protection you should be looking for if you want to protect your ears but still hear all the details.
