Despite the hype, despite the seemingly unashamed ambiguity of the term - Web 3.0’s march towards the mainstream continues. The ecosystem of Defi projects, “DAOs”, NFT platforms, and virtual marketplaces grows with it. But the fundamental question remains: why do we need the blockchain for this? Is the internet not capable of remaining decentralised without the concept of tokenisation? Does the environmental chaos wreaked by blockchains not negate its viability? And what of the rampant financial crime? The industry sees much promise in the technology, but is Meta’s first move in this space the right one? Why should we be getting excited by something so nascent?
