In 2021, losses from crypto related scams more than doubled to £190mn compared with 2020, according to Action Fraud. Regulators are concerned that the cost of living crisis will only encourage scammers and exacerbate these losses as individuals become increasingly vulnerable to fake investment opportunities. How can law enforcement and regulators better protect consumers and detect and trace fraud? What impact will the markets in crypto-assets (MiCA) bill have on crypto exchanges and their role in tracing scammers? Is it possible to find a balance between decentralisation and consumer protection?
