Climate Solutions in a Critical Decade

Earth Room. The Global Carbon Budget 2022 report showed that global carbon emissions remain at record levels. If current emissions levels persist, there is now a 50% chance that global warming of 1.5°C will be exceeded in just nine years. The science also shows that we are now approaching dangerous thresholds – or tipping points – in multiple bio-physical systems that risk locking us into devastating climate change for generations to come. Five of these negative tipping points are possible at the current level of warming, including in the Arctic and Antarctic. It is vital that we reduce global carbon emissions fast in the critical decade ahead. In the face of the negative climatic tipping points, scientists, business leaders and policy makers have also identified positive tipping points ‐ solutions that offer a way to rapidly increase the deployment of zero-emissions solutions and drastically cut global emissions. This event at the World Economic Forum will bring together experts on negative and positive tipping points, first exploring our current path and specifically the Arctic risks to the rest of the planet and then the innovative solutions and decisions required to achieve urgent positive change.
