Helping People Navigate an AI World

Venue: JW Marriott, Salon 6. Today’s world increasingly requires AI literacy. For people’s safety, their careers, and higher aspects of humanity, such as freedom and flourishing, there is a growing need to navigate the AI systems that pervade everyone’s lives. We have been leading design & research workshops at Google to build AI literacy into our products with Explainability. In today’s session we will share what we’ve learned from our research and these workshops including: our design philosophy which takes a Broader View of Explainability, and our Explainability Rubric, a checklist of 21 design areas and reflection questions to help product makers evaluate and improve explanations. As designers we must move beyond ascribing the achievements of AI to magic, instead providing transparency and education.
